The Laundry Café and Me

I've become a regular at the laundry café near my place. I've actually only used it as a laundromat once so far... but as a café, I've been more times than I can count. Now that it's gotten hot, lately it's iced coffee.

The menu's been growing lately — taiyaki, canelé, chocolate banana, bagels, ice cream, donuts, pasta, curry, hot dogs, pancakes... everything from snacks to light meals is on offer.

I used to always order the coffee-and-donut set (there's a ticket machine inside the shop), but I started thinking I was eating too many sweets, so now I hold back. I steel myself and press only the "iced coffee" button. With that little inner struggle behind me, my time at the laundry café begins. I spend it working, writing this zine, or just losing myself in time that belongs only to me — mixed in with the sound of the washing machines, people's voices, and the tapping of laptop keyboards.

Band Photo Shoot, 3 Years On!!

July 8 (Wed). I was actually supposed to go to diiv's Japan show! But about a month ago it got cancelled for various reasons... While I was still disappointed about that, Pacome — who runs a French restaurant called "Yama Budou" in Yamanouchi, Nagano — messaged to say he'd be coming to Tokyo, and just like that, our band photo shoot for the day fell into place. We shot it around Shibuya's Mitake-dori, right after the rainy season ended. Pacome has such a striking eye for reading light — even while being photographed, I found myself moved by it. I thought about how just a slight change in angle or where you're standing can completely change the result. It felt like there really is a god who lives in the details, like they say. I can't wait to see how the photos turn out.

People Born in July

July is the birthday month of my older nephew. I'd remembered that I meant to message my sister on his actual birthday morning, but once the day got going I got caught up being busy and forgot — only realizing the next morning, after washing my face. In the cute birthday card I'd prepared ahead of time, a day late, I wrote "Happy birthday. Let's play again soon," put it in a deep pink envelope, and mailed it in the red postbox. I'd actually bought that birthday card about a month earlier. Shō — my younger nephew — also has his birthday this month. A real summer boy.

The Picture Book "Zetsubō no Dakuten" (The Voiced-Sound Mark of Despair)

Written by Harada Munenori, illustrated by Yunoki Samiro

This is a picture book a friend gave me after I got through a painful time. Coincidentally, I'd just been to see the Yunoki Samiro exhibition at the Opera City Art Gallery the year before. His bold, earthy-in-a-good-way, powerful illustrations fit perfectly with the strange story — a journey through the hiragana kingdom, following Dakuten-san, the little `゛` mark, from the word "zetsubō" (despair). It really moved me. Which, coincidentally, ties right back into the nephew's-birthday story above — I ended up passing this picture book on to my nephew. With thanks to the friend who introduced me to such a wonderful book.
